Words cannot explain how amazing Erykah Badu is in concert. Well, my words can't anyway, I'm sure hers could.
I attended The Vortex Tour 2008 concert at Massey Hall last night, and was blown away by her lyrics, her stage presence and by the way her amazing personality was shining through with each and every move she made.
She was so graceful, so at ease, that the it didn't seem one bit weird when she ripped off her elaborate hat midway through a song. Didn't seem one bit odd that she sang and danced in a du-rag, and swore to keep her "God damned" uncomfortable hat at home next time.
Even the portion of the evening when she sang to a large exercises ball while her back up singers waved large scarves in the background, added to her creative genius.
Ms. Badu has got to be one of my all-time favourite artists, and I really have to thank my best friend Shil for working so hard to get me these concert tickets. I couldn't stop smiling the whole time while I was watching, and couldn't help my eyes from darting around the stage, taking in the gorgeous back up singers (one of whom happens to be her sister), the bongo player, the flutist and the many others occupying the stage.
Everything from Badu's eclectic choice of instruments, her lyrics, her wit and humor, to her sweet way of sipping tea in between songs added to her overall eccentric charm. I also really like the way that stories about her real life are intertwined with words of wisdom to formulate each and every one of her songs.
Further research into her background has surfaced some fantastic information on her, and I even found this March 2008 Jet magazine cover (via her fansite) that features her in Paisley! I know, I couldn't believe it either, and was happy to be able to share it with you guys. You should also check this awesome message that she left on the OkayPlayer boards not too long ago, you'll see exactly what I'm talking about when I say she has a way with words.
Heard it, seen it, now lovin' it more than ever, Erykah Badu reigns supreme.
Your obsession with paisley is funny. What do you think about THIS Hoodie for guys or THESE Pants for girls? It's not paisley, but not everyone is perfect, right?
